  • Restoring an Icon of Time - The Refurbishment of the Elizabeth Tower

    Tuesday 9th April 2024, 1800 for 1830 start

AluK Design Studio, 5-11 Worship Street, London, EC2A 2BH

Affectionately known around the world as Big Ben and shrouded in scaffolding from 2017-2022, the Elizabeth Tower was repaired from the gilt cross and orb at its tip, to the bottom of its 334-step staircase. It was the most complex conservation project in the tower’s history, bringing remarkable legacy from the past to the present. Renata and Charlotte will talk on how they led restoring Big Ben to its former glory and modernising its facilities to make it fit for the 21st century. The vital work ensured that the Grade-I listed building, situated on a Unesco world heritage site, was safeguarded for future generations to visit and enjoy.

Speakers:
  • Renata Valnarova-Zadgorska – Senior Project Manager, Lendlease Consulting

Renata Valnarova is a Senior Project Manager at Lendlease Consulting and managed the refurbishment of the Elizabeth Tower. Renata studied construction project management at Oxford Brookes University and completed a master's in construction law & dispute resolution at King's College. In her 8 years at Lendlease, Renata provided design safety consultancy services prior to joining the Parliamentary Estate project management team in 2018.

  • Charlotte Claughton – Senior Project Leader, UK Parliament

Charlotte Claughton MBE is a Senior Project Leader with the Parliamentary Estate and oversaw the refurbishment of the Elizabeth Tower. Initially studying architecture, Charlotte stumbled into project management before taking a client-side role at parliament in 2015, leading on conversation projects including the encaustic tile pavement restoration and stone courtyard conservation, prior to Big Ben.
