Reducing carbon emissions is a global priority, but how much difference can one individual really make?

We’re told that flying is bad. We’re encouraged to think about diets and reusable coffee cups. But the carbon savings we can achieve through our work as developers, designers and engineers is far greater.

Not flying from London to New York saves 800kg of CO2 emitted in to the atmosphere. But reducing the volume of concrete in a building by one truck load (6m3 ) saves 2060kg of CO2.

The construction sector accounts for over 36% of both final energy and process-related emissions. 11% of those emissions results from the manufacture of building materials. This means construction professionals have an average yearly CO2 footprint of 95,925kg. That's the equivalent of 120 flights from London to New York.

Join Our Expert Speaker on 13 September

Join Rossella Nicolin, Head of Sustainability - Europe at Laing O'Rourke also a member of the Institution of Structural Engineers Climate Emergency Task Group. She will talk about how the Institution of Structural Engineers is supporting members in making informed decisions to reduce the embodied carbon footprint of buildings.
