The shift to digital design is accelerating thanks to sophisticated, data-driven tools that go beyond BIM. Algorithmic simulation, machine learning and generative design vastly accelerate the process. Better still, they generate far more possible solutions, which means better outcomes.

Meanwhile, new forms of construction are harnessing the benefits of manufacturing. Construction 'Platforms' combine design, manufacture, and procurement principles holistically to ensure a greater degree of rationalisation and integration. Manufactured components can be used across sectors creating high, constant demand and economies of scale.

However, these are not a series of separate initiatives; the increasing convergence of digital ways of working and manufactured solutions are part of a single, holistic approach which is creating enormous benefits. This talk will explore this these topics and discuss what this means for the construction industry moving forwards.

Presenter

Jaimie Johnston Having joined Bryden Wood, a tech-led team of designers, shortly after the practice’s formation in 1995, Jaimie leads the application of systems to the delivery and operation of high performing assets. This includes both physical (DfMA) and digital (data analysis and digital engineering) systems for projects in the UK, Europe and Asia.

Jaimie was the author of the documents ‘Delivery Platforms for Government Assets: Creating a Marketplace for Manufactured Spaces’, 'Platforms: Bridging the gap between construction + manufacturing'. These were influential in Government policy and stagey, with the Platform approach being a key feature of the Construction Playbook published in December 2020.

Jaimie is also the Design Lead for the Construction Innovation Hub.
