Modern methods of design and offsite construction are vital for addressing the pressing challenges the industry faces today, such as the UK’s housing shortfall and plugging the workforce skills gap. Clients seek the benefits of shorter programmes, higher quality and cost savings, but find it hard to navigate the myriad of offsite options available to them. They often need to be presented with the clear benefits an offsite approach can bring and how and when to apply it.
To address this client need, Ramboll has developed the Offsite Review. This is a digital assessment of a project as early as RIBA Stage 1 to assess the feasibility and value of different offsite systems. The assessment draws upon the latest digital design methods and also presents information in a way that supports informed decision making.
This presentation will explain the technical background to Offsite Reviews. It also considers the psychology of decision making, and how designing with data can overcome cognitive bias. It will also show how the design process for offsite construction projects is fundamentally changing with digital design tools, and will illustrate an interactive method to help decision makers to make the right choices at the start of their projects.
Andy Mather is an Associate at Ramboll with a focus on developing offsite construction strategies. He has delivered projects in most offsite systems. Spurred on by the need to improve how things are built in the UK, he now focuses on improving how end-to-end processes are set up for projects/products.
