Is an intelligent building “smart”? Or is a smart building intelligent? Can a comparison be made between buildings and the human body? If so, do buildings need a central nervous system to maximise functionality and efficiency?

The presentation will address this and the following topics:

  • What are intelligent building systems and what benefits do they provide?
  • What is the infrastructure needed to support these systems and why converge the networks?
  • Barriers to adoption and risks
  • The effect of design and implementation of converged networks on the other parts of the construction.

Barry Shambrook was recently appointed Partner for High Tech Project Management at GIA LLP. He heads up and develops their data centre and high technology buildings and infrastructure project management offering. Prior to this he was Managing Director of Tuckers Consultancy, MEP engineers.

Barry has worked on prestigious projects for contractors and consultants including hospitals, hotels, high rise offices, sports facilities and data centres in a role that developed from HVAC to design and project management of all MEP systems. He actively promoted integrated design of IT with other facilities technology on a number of these projects.

Barry contributes to BICSI standards on intelligent buildings and data centres. BICSI is an international institute for IT network infrastructure.
